INTRODUCTION

This pamphlet contains defenses to artificial preempts which are allowed under the ACBL MidChart and SuperChart.

D Should you use any of these conventions, it is your responsibility to present this pamphlet (or a copy of the defense in the booklet) for your opponents' use.

D After the pre-Alert, opponents of pairs using any of these methods will indicate whether they will use (1) these defenses, (2) a defense completely their own or (3) a defense created by modifying (by deletion or addition) the pamphlet defense.

D The defending pair is permitted to consult the written defense during the hand. The written defense may be the booklet defense, one of their own devising, or an edited version of the booklet defense.

This booklet contains some simple but effective defenses to artificial preempts currently played in MidChart and SuperChart events. Any pair using an artificial preempt covered in this booklet shall make a copy of this booklet available to their opponents. This gives the opposition an opportunity to discuss defenses in advance and agree on these or other defenses. This information is provided to give everyone a good working defense. Those who feel this to be inadequate are welcome to devise their own defenses.

Please Note: Throughout this Booklet
"M" Stands for MAJOR and means "H or S".
"X" stands for any suit and means "H, S, D, or C".

Basic Concepts vs. Artificial Preempts

  1. Direct double of a bid below 2NT shows 13-15 (balanced or semi-balanced) or a strong hand.

  2. Any other double which is your side's first non-pass call is for takeout.

  3. After an overcall when their suit is unknown, bidding the cheaper minor is an artificial force (like a cuebid).

  4. If the preempt could be either strong or weak, assume the weak meaning.

Versus an opening bid of 2C which shows either
(1) a strong hand or
(2) a weak 2 in diamonds:

Double = 13-15 balanced or big hand.
2D = Takeout double of diamonds.
Bids of 2H or higher should be played as you now play versus a weak 2D.
This includes follow-up auctions.

AFTER:

    2C - Pass - 2D: As over a weak 2D opening.

    2C - Pass - 2M or 3 of any suit:
    Double = Takeout.
    Overcalls = Natural.

    2C - Pass - 2D - Pass - Pass:
    Double = Penalty.

    2C - Double - Pass:
    Pass = Neutral, could be just a weak balanced hand.
    2D = Cuebid, does not promise a rebid.
    2H or 2S = Natural to play.
    2NT = Natural invitational.
    3X = Natural invitational.

    2C - Double - 2D:
    Double = Responsive. Bids of 3D and higher by doubler
    show the big hand.
    2H = Natural to play.
    2S = Natural to play.
    2NT = Natural invitational.
    3C, H, S = Natural invitational.
    3D = Game forcing cuebid.

    2C - Double - 2D - Pass - Pass:
    Double = 19+ balanced.
    Bids = Natural and strong.
    Jump bids = Natural and forcing.

Versus a multi-2D opening which shows a weak 2-bid in either major:

Note: (a more complex defense is available here.)

Double = Takeout of spades. Respond as you would to a double of a weak 2-bid, including lebensohl, if used.
2H = Takeout of hearts. Respond as to a double of a weak 2-bid, including lebensohl, if used.
Pass then double = Light takeout.
2S, 3H = Natural. A response in other major is a cuebid, jumps are natural.
2NT = 16-18. Respond as to a 2NT opening bid.
3 of a minor = Natural.
3S = Strong and natural (4H is a cuebid).
4 of a minor = 5+ - 5+ in the suit bid and a major. 4Dover 4C asks for the major; 4H over 4D = pass if suit is hearts else correct to spades.

The following doubles are takeout:
1. 2D - Pass - 2M - Double
2. 2D - Pass - 2M - Pass - Pass - Double
3. 2D - Pass - 2H - Pass - 2 S - Double
Responses to all these doubles are the same as after a double of a weak 2-bid. Lebensohl applies if you normally play it after (2M) - Double - Pass.

After 2 D - Pass - 2M:
Double = Takeout.
4 of a minor = 5+ - 5+ in that minor and a major 4D asks for the major, 4M = pass or correct.
2 NT = 15-18. Respond as to 2NT opening.
3M or 4M = Natural

After 2D - Pass -2H - Double- 2S:
Double = Penalty opposite takeout of hearts.
3H = Natural assuming doubler is short in hearts.

After 2D - Pass - 2H - Pass - 2 S - Pass - Pass:
Double = Takeout of spades.

After 2 D - Pass - Pass: Same as over a weak 2D

Versus 2H opening which is 3-suited, short diamonds, 11-15 (Can be 4-3 in majors)

Double = 5+ hearts, generally opening hand or better
2S = Natural, generally opening hand
2NT = 15-17 balanced
3C = Strong diamond overcall
3D = Normal diamond overcall
3M = Natural and strong
3NT = To play
2H - Pass - Pass; or 2H - Pass - 2S:
Double = Takeout (basically for diamonds and other major)
2S = Natural, 10-16
2NT = Strong NT
3C = Strong diamond overcall
3D = Normal diamond overcall
3S/2H = Natural and strong
3H/2S = Natural Three-level cuebid = 5 - 5+ in diamonds and the other major
2H - Pass - 3C:

2S = Natural. 3H response is a cuebid.
2NT = 15-18 balanced (respond as to a 2NT opening).
3 suit = Natural. 3 of a major response is a cuebid.
2H - Pass - Pass and
2H - Pass - 2S are the same structure except:
2H - Pass - 2S - 3S is a strong minor 1-suiter looking for a spade stopper for notrump.
AFTER:
2H - Pass - 2NT:
Double = Good hand.
Overcall = Natural.

Other major = Natural and constructive.
NT = Natural and constructive.
2 H - Pass - 2S - Pass - Pass:
Double = Light 3-suited takeout.
2NT = Light hand with both minors.

Versus 2S opening which is a weak preempt in a minor

Double = 13-15 or good 18+ balanced or unbalanced.
Note: No direct bid for a 3-suiter exists, usually you pass and make a takeout double later.
However, with an 18+ 3-suiter you may double directly to guard against a pass of 2S
.

2NT = 16-18 (Respond as to a 2NT opening).
3C = Majors (3D asks for 5-card suit, bid singleton with 5-5 and extras).

AFTER:
2S - Pass: Later doubles by second hand are takeout of suit doubled, 11-17.
2S - Pass - Pass: All bids are the same as in immediate position except that
point count is a bit lower. Similar continuations apply.
2S - Pass - 2NT: Bid as to a 2NT which shows a minor preempt.
2S - Pass - natural suit: Bid as to an opening 3-bid.
2S - Pass - 3 or 4 of minor which is pass or correct: Double is takeout, suits natural.

2NT = Balanced 16-18. Respond as to 2NT opening.
