Carmeline Squires

Carmeline Squires, a remarkable woman of unwavering strength and enduring spirit, peacefully passed away on July 27, 2023, in the comfort of her home, surrounded by her dedicated caregivers, after a courageous battle with chronic lung disease. She was 86 years old.
Born in Rome, NY, Carmeline emerged as the youngest of four daughters to Italian immigrant parents, shaping her life with the rich tapestry of her heritage. She graduated from Rome Free Academy, a foundation that would fuel her many accomplishments.
Carmeline's love story was one of resilience and commitment. She found her soulmate in Lt. Col. (ret) Darrell "Dick" Squires, embarking on a partnership that spanned 61 years of shared experiences. Dick's distinguished 32-year career in the Air Force saw them traverse the globe, weaving a trail of memories across different cultures and landscapes. This chapter of her life concluded with Dick's passing in 2018.
Settling in Texas, Carmeline's heart continued to beat for community and service. She embraced her role as a beacon of change, serving as a councilwoman in Universal City from 1986 to 1988. Breaking barriers, she ascended to become the first female Mayor of Universal City, a position she held from 1988 to 1994. Her leadership inspired not only her peers but also garnered her the prestigious Woman of the Year award in 1991 from the San Antonio Express News.
Her commitment to public service was woven into the very fabric of her being. Carmeline's devotion led her to countless roles that shaped the landscape of her community. She served as the President of the Alamo Area Council of Government, a member of the Board of Directors for the 911 Emergency Network, and a Diplomat for the Randolph Chambers of Commerce. Her impact rippled further as the President of the Randolph Officers Club, President of Catholic Women of Randolph, and various other roles, each reflecting her unwavering dedication.
Carmeline was a woman of diverse passions. Her love for card games made her both an avid bridge player and an impressive poker strategist. Her laughter was infectious, and her ready smile became a symbol of warmth to those fortunate enough to know her. With an indomitable wit and a spirited personality, Carmeline leaves behind a legacy of cherished memories, impacting the lives of numerous close friends and cherished family members.
Preceded in death by her beloved husband, Darryl Squires, Carmeline's legacy lives on through her nephews, Joseph Pasternak, Thomas Pasternak, and Craig McGahan, who hold her memory dear.
A Memorial Service to celebrate Carmeline's remarkable life was held on Friday, September 1, 2023 at JBSA Randolph followed by interment at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery.
