MINUTES

DISTRICT 16, UNIT 207

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING

June 11, 2008

The meeting was called to order at 3 p.m.  Members present were Harriette Bowles, Robert Donathan, Mark McAllister, Leonard McCormick, Mark Miller, Charlie Aufill, and Phyllis Tate.  Members absent were Larry Davis and Joe Black.

The minutes of the last meeting were approved as circulated.  The Treasurer’s Report was presented by Robert Donathan.  The results of the Sectional Tournament were pleasing.  Robert suggested that we move $25,000 to a Vanguard Short-Term Investment Grade Fund in order to take advantage of a potentially higher yield for a year.  The board voted to authorize Robert to do so.

Mark Miller presented the Membership Report.  We are growing by approximately 15 new members per month.  This is due in large part to the excellent work being done by our teachers whose students are beginning to play in regular games.  Mark would like to encourage members to provide us with an e-mail address so that we can keep the membership better informed about upcoming events.

The Business Manager’s Report was reviewed to preview upcoming Unit events.  Harriette has made arrangements for meals, snacks, and ice cream as needed for these events.

The Board voted to approve giving Unit 207 Flight B members $500 each who have advanced to the finals of the GNT event in Las Vegas.  The money would be only available to Unit 207 members who qualified or Unit 207 members who are designated as substitutes for members who are unable to attend.

The “8 is enough” team concept was discussed.  This event has become extremely popular in other units.  It is a single session, Swiss-Team format where the teams may consist only of a combination of players according to the following scale:

A (no limit) players = 3 points each

B (maximum 2000 Master Points) players = 2 points each

C (maximum 750 Master Points) players = 1 point each

The total number of points for the team would be 8.  Therefore, the team could be made up of one A, two B’s, and one C for example.  Any combination that does not exceed 8 would be permitted.  The August 16 Unit Event will be designated as “8 is Enough.”  The Board plans to publicize and to encourage people to participate in this new event.

The meeting as adjourned at 4:07 p.m.
